TVET, Higher Education and Work
The ‘TVET, Higher Education and Work’ special interest group will focus specifically on research and development in post school contexts. Post-schooling in South Africa is defined as education and training beyond formal general schooling, and includes universities, TVET colleges, adult education, and workplace settings. The relationship between education and work is contested terrain that is currently the subject of much debate and recent large-scale empirical studies which are still in progress. Vocational education, particularly in TVET colleges but also across tertiary institutions, continues to be at the forefront of policy initiatives driven by economic imperatives. The local knowledge base on education and training beyond general schooling is relatively thin and underdeveloped, hence an over-reliance on international scholarship in this domain. A special focus by SAERA on TVET, Higher Education and Work is thus timely and necessary, and it is hoped that the local research community will build the field by presenting research that responds to the questions posed by our developing context”.
The TVET, HE and Work SIG is thus inclusive of the major domains of ‘post-school education and training’, which acts as a ‘place holder’ in the South African context, rather than presuming to be a field of knowledge.
