SAERA 2024 is only a few weeks away!
Conference theme: Education Ideologies and National Development.
The 11th SAERA Conference will be hosted by the University of Free State (UFS), Faculty of Education, Bloemfontein Campus, Economics and Management Sciences (EBW Auditorium). Congratulations to the UFS Local Organising Committee and all respective stakeholders who have been working very hard to host a successful SAERA Conference this year.
A glimpse at some conference highlights:
Day 1 (29 Oct). Our Early Career Researchers (ECR) will have activities on the first day in the morning. Participation is open for all the pre-conference workshops. Two keynotes will be delivered on day 1 in the morning and afternoon.
The first day will end with several key book launches, a meeting of SIG convenors and an art exhibition to bring day 1 to a close. Please look out for these on the programme page.
DAY 1 (29th Oct)

Day 2 will be concluded with the SAERA AGM. The AGM will be preceded by SIG panel discussions. During the conference we will foreground discussions to promote the SIGs with a dedicated plenary SIG session led by coordinators.
Day 3 (31 Oct)
- Keynote 4: “Beyond the Margins: Pathways Towards Educational Development”- Brenda Marina

- Reflections and vote of thanks
The Conference will be concluded by critically reflecting on SAERA 2024, summative reflections of 2023 and how the reflections inform our movement towards 2025. Biographies for this year’s keynote speakers can be found listed on the conference website
The Nelson Mandela Legacy Lecture:
The 2024 Nelson Mandela Legacy Lecture will be held after the conference in November and will be delivered online. A link to register to participate will be circulated to all members in coming days, and will be available via the association and conference website..
Key themes for the conference:
The programme has been organised according to the following sub-themes:
- Ideologies and the development of national education policies in the Global North and South.
- Ideologies and functional education for sustainable development.
- Ideologies and social transformation in postcolonial societies.
- Ideological influences in the development of early childhood care and education
- Higher education, ideologies, citizenship and leadership for sustainable education
- Ideologies, gender discourses and social transformation
- Personal ideologies, professional ethics, and teacher professionalism in the 21st century.
- Obstacles and opportunities to the development of sustainable African indigenous education ideologies
- Professional ethics and teaching for change in the 21st century.
- Digital Literacy, information communication technology (ICT) and ideological transformation
Partnerships and collaboration:
This year’s conference will be held in association with the Southern Africa Educational Research Network. SAERA will be hosting the SAERN delegates as partners in the conference for the first time. After attending the BOLESWANA biennial conference. SAERA members became interested in working as a member of a regional network. The SAERA application was endorsed in 2016 in the biennial conference in Botswana. Today, the regional network’s name is Southern Africa Educational Research Network (SAERN).
